SALT INFORMATIONAmpicillin (250 mg) TYPICAL USAGE Gram positve bacteria, H-influenzae, E-coli, Proteus, Salmonella and Shigella, Strep.viridans, pneumococci, gonococci and meningococci. Urinary tract infections. Respiratory tract infections. Meningitis. Gonorrhoea. Cholecystitis. Subacute bacterial endocarditis. Septicaemias and mixed infections. SIDE EFFECTS Urticaria, eosinophilia, leucopenia, neutropenia, seizures, agranulocytosis, hemolysis, dizziness, headache, anorexia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, maculopapular rash, gastritis, elevation of liver enzymes. DRUG INTERACTION Simultaneous use with oral contraceptives may lead to increased risk of breakthrough bleeding and reduced efficacy of the contraceptive. Skin rash increased with allopurinol. Probenecid increases blood levels. MECHANISM OF ACTION By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, Ampicillin inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that Ampicillin interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
