CompositionGlimepiride (1mg),Metformin (500mg) SALT INFORMATIONGlimepiride (1mg) TYPICAL USAGE Non-insulin dependent diabetes. SIDE EFFECTS Nausea and stomach upset DRUG INTERACTION Medicines that can increase blood sugar can reverse the action of glimepiride. These drugs include diuretics, for example, hydrochlorothiazide (Hydrodiuril, Ezide, Hydro-Par, Microzide, and many combinations with other drugs), furosemide (Lasix), corticosteroids such as prednisone and methylprednisolone (Medrol), phenytoin (Dilantin),niacin, and sympathomimetics such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed). Beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin) can cause low or high blood sugar. MECHANISM OF ACTION This medication is an oral hypoglycemic (anti-diabetic drug), prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Metformin (500mg) TYPICAL USAGE Diabetes mellitus, Hyperlipoproteinaemia, Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, Insulin resistance, Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, Obesity. SIDE EFFECTS Vasculitis, Pneumonitis, Malabsorption of vit B12, Malabsorpton of folic acid, Megaloblastic anemia, Hypoglycemia. DRUG INTERACTION Additive effect with sulphonylureas. Glycaemic control may be affected by diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, oestrogens. MECHANISM OF ACTION The exact mechanism of action of metformin is unclear but it appears to reduce glucose absorption from the GI tract, reduce gluconeogenesis and enhance insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilisation.
