CompositionLactulose (450 ml) SALT INFORMATIONLactulose (450 ml) TYPICAL USAGE Portal systemic encephalopathy, chronic or habitual constipation. SIDE EFFECTS Hypokalemia, hyponatremia, dehydration, flatulence, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, eructation. DRUG INTERACTION Lactulose is known to interact with other drugs like mesalazine. These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required. MECHANISM OF ACTION Lactulose is broken down primarily to lactic acid, and also to small amounts of formic and acetic acids, by the action of via evolved-beta galactosidase from colonic bacteria, which results in an increase in osmotic pressure and slight acidification of the colonic contents. This in turn causes an increase in stool water content and softens the stool.
