As benzocaine is not absorbed significantly from mucous mebrane or abraded skin, so it is used in as lozenges for stomatitis and sore throat; dusting power/ointment on wounds/ulcerated surfaces and as suppository for anoreactal lesions. SIDE EFFECTS Dizziness, Headache, Drowsiness, Anxiety, Restlessness, Urticaria, Photosensitivity, Burning, Tremor, Edema, Contact dermatitis, Stinging on application, Urethritis, Tenderness. DRUG INTERACTION Antagonism with sulfonamides, aminosalicylic acid. MECHANISM OF ACTION Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic which acts by preventing the generation and transmission of impulses along nerve fibers and at nerve endings. Depolarisation and ion-exchange are inhibited. In general, loss of pain occurs before loss of sensory, autonomic and motor functions.
